Undergraduate research on “Acetylated cassava starch
nanoparticles for targeted
anticancer drug delivery.”
In this study, starch synthesized from cassava was converted into starch acetate via an
esterification reaction. The
drug-loaded nanoparticles were prepared using the nanoprecipitation method. Bergenin
obtained from Flueggea
leucopyrus leaves extract was used as the active ingredient for the encapsulation. The
mean particle diameter of
nanoparticles was 183 nm, determined by dynamic light scattering. Loading efficiency
(LE%) and loading
capacity (LC%) were determined by UV-Vis spectrum and showed clear absorption peaks at
217 nm and 273 nm
specific for bergenin in the leaves extract. The LE% and LC% were 54.09% and 27.76%
correspondingly. The
drug release studies showed that acetylated starch nanoparticles allowed the immediate
release of bergenin at pH
5.6. These results indicate that starch acetate nanoparticle is a promising vehicle for
natural anticancer drugs and
a potential candidate for targeted anticancer drug delivery.
